That is a more compelling application of AI than simply asking a model to read a stack of PDFs faster than a person can.
It is also a more responsible one.
PBM selection involves financial, clinical, operational, legal, and organizational considerations that cannot always be reduced to a numerical ranking. AI can improve the information available to decision-makers without becoming the decision-maker.
The sequence matters: structured information enables better comparison. Better comparison enables better analysis. AI can then accelerate and enhance that analysis.
AI is an enhancement layer, not the foundation.
Speed Matters, but Better Use of Expertise Matters More
Procurement technology is frequently evaluated by how much time it saves.
That is understandable. PBM procurements can demand substantial resources from procurement teams, consultants, finance departments, clinicians, legal counsel, benefits professionals, and executive leadership. Reducing unnecessary administrative work has obvious value.
But speed alone is an incomplete measure of success.
Consider what happens to the hours that technology saves.
If better information structure reduces the time required to locate responses, reconcile terminology, normalize spreadsheets, and organize documentation, those hours do not simply disappear. They can be redirected toward evaluating strategy, testing assumptions, examining financial differences, understanding clinical programs, negotiating terms, and preparing for implementation.

But they are becoming the baseline rather than the destination.
The more important questions are increasingly about what the technology makes possible.
- Does it improve vendor visibility?
- Does it make meaningful differences easier to identify?
- Does it reduce repetitive work for requestors and vendors?
- Does it make information more comparable?
- Does it help experts spend more time applying judgment?
- Does it allow new analytical technologies, including AI, to operate on better information?
And ultimately, does it help the organization make a better-informed procurement decision?
PBM procurement technology does not need to replace the RFP, the consultant, the procurement professional, or executive judgment to represent meaningful progress. It needs to improve the environment in which all of them operate.
